Former Braves pitcher Shelby Miller expects to make his next start for the Arizona Diamondbacks after suffering an unusual injury late Saturday night.
Miller left with two outs in the second inning against the Padres after cutting two knuckles on a finger on his pitching hand.
Miller twice scraped his right hand on the ground on his follow through, causing the cuts.
"Some poor mechanics more than anything," he said.
He walked two batters, forcing in a run and was removed from the game. The Padres eventually won the game 5-3 on former Brave Melvin Upton Jr.'s home run in the 14th inning.
Miller said he never hit his hand on the ground when he pitched for the Braves or Cardinals.
The Braves traded Miller and a minor-league pitcher to the Diamondbacks in the offseason. Atlanta acquired outfielder Ender Inciarte, shortstop Dansby Swanson and pitcher Aaron Blair. Inciarte is on the disabled list and Swanson and Blair are in the minors.
Miller is 0-1 with an 8.53 ERA in three starts with Arizona. He had a 3.02 ERA for the Braves last season when he went 6-17.
