Booing Jason Heyward?

It never happened in Atlanta but it did in St. Louis Monday.

The former Braves standout from Henry County was jeered by Cardinals fans in his first game in St. Louis since he elected to leave the city as a free agent and sign with the Chicago Cubs.

Heyward took off his helmet and looked around Busch Stadium when he heard the boos before his first at-bat.

"If somebody boos me here, that means they were not happy to see me leave," Heyward said later. "I'm kind of glad that people weren't happy to see me leave."

The crowd cheered when Heyward struck out in the first inning.

The New York Daily news reported that microphones picked up fans yelling racial slurs at Heyward.

But ESPN, which broadcast the game, said it has not detected "any tangible specifics from the ESPN game audio."

Heyward signed a $184 million, eight-year contract with the Cubs in the offseason. But he's off  to a slow start with his third major-league team, batting .205 with no homers.

The Braves traded Heyward and pitcher Jordan Walden to the Cardinals in 2014 for pitchers Shelby Miller and Tyrell Jenkins.
