Luis Avilan threw a bullpen on Wednesday afternoon to test out the hamstring that cramped up on him during Tuesday’s relief appearance. Avilan came away feeling fine, though manager Fredi Gonzalez may decide to give him another day or two to rest it.

“We’ll see,” Gonzalez said.

Avilan’s hamstring cramped up after he dived out of the way of bat shard after he gave up a broken bat single to Daniel Murphy. He tried to throw a warm-up pitch and felt it grab, so he came out of the game. It was an improvement over a similar injury this time last year though when Avilan cramped up making a pitch against the Royals. He had to be taken off the field on a cart. Avilan missed the next four games but avoided the disabled list.

“Last year we had to cart him off, this year he walked off,” Gonzalez said, laughing. “Maybe by next year he can pitch through it.”

Gonzalez said Avilan told him with the cooler weather he had not been as diligent as he needed to be about staying hydrated. That’s something he’ll take care of over the next few days.
