2008 MLB Draft: Georgia's top prospects

Georgia boasts several of the top baseball prospects in the 2008 MLB Draft.

The Tampa Bay Rays selected Griffin High shortstop Tim Beckham No. 1 in the 2008 MLB Draft.

Florida State catcher Buster Posey, a graduate of Georgia's Lee Co. High School, was taken fifth by San Francisco.

With the 8th pick, the Chicago White Sox selected Georgia shortstop Gordon Beckham (Westminster).

Georgia Tech OF Charlie Blackmon (right, in black) is ranked 142 on the Baseball America Top 200 and is a North Gwinnett graduate.

Parkview OF Zach Cone (left, with Wesleyan's Connor Winn) is the quintessential five-tool player. Cone was a third-round supplemental draft choice of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Lassiter pitcher Michael Palazzone, who has signed with Georgia, was selected by the Braves in Day 2, Round 18 of the draft.

Georgia pitcher Josh Fields was a second draft choice last year by the Braves. The graduate of Prince Ave. Christian School in Athens returned for a senior year and this year was picked 20th by the Seattle Mariners.

Georgia pitcher Trevor Holder, listed at 148 on the Baseball America Top 200, was selected 298th by the Florida Marlins.

The Houston Astros selected Milton 1B/OF Chase Davidson, ranked 106 in Baseball America's Top 200.

Georgia Tech pitcher David Duncan, helped lead the Jackets to the 2008 NCAA Tournament, was a Houston Astros selection.

North Atlanta's Jay Austin (shown with the East Cobb Astros) ranks 99th on Baseball America's Top 200 players in the nation. He went 56th overall to the Baltimore Orioles.

Cedar Grove's Xavier Avery will have to choose between a baseball career and college football. A Georgia football signee, Avery was a second-round draft choice by the Houston Astros as 50.
