PHOENIX - The Braves claimed catcher Chadwick Tromp off waivers from the Giants and assigned him to Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday.

Tromp has appeared in 33 games with the Giants over the past two seasons, hitting .215/.220/.418 with five homers and 12 RBIs in his young career. Since 2018, Tromp has played in 135 games in Triple-A, hitting .253/316/.414 while drawing positive reviews behind the plate. Tromp was designated for assignment last weekend when the Giants activated lefty Alex Wood, who started against the Braves on Saturday.

The 26-year-old Tromp adds to the Braves’ thin organizational depth at catcher. With veteran Stephen Vogt injured, prospect William Contreras is starter Travis d’Arnaud’s backup in the majors. D’Arnaud signed a two-year extension in August, while Vogt is a free agent at season’s end. The organization lacks ready options beyond them.

Top prospect Shea Langeliers is at Double-A Mississippi, and while the franchise is high on its 2019 first-round pick, Langeliers isn’t an option in the coming weeks or early 2022. Tromp gives the team a player with major-league experience who’s under team control through 2025 (he’s arbitration-eligible for the first time in 2023). If he remains with the organization through the winter, he could compete for the backup job next spring while Contreras and Langeliers continue their development in the minors.

Braves notes:

- The Braves’ victories Sunday and Monday marked their first time winning consecutive games since Sept. 9-10. They moved to 48-18 when hitting two or more home runs with Monday’s blowout win, in which outfielder Adam Duvall and Eddie Rosario homered.

- Shortstop Dansby Swanson was the only starting position player without a hit Monday, going 0-for-5 with a run scored. The Braves are hoping Swanson will awake before October. He’s finishing his breakout season with a thud, hitting .109/.203/.182 in 16 games this month. He has two extra-base hits in those 55 at-bats.

- Third baseman Austin Riley has four doubles in his past two games, including three Monday. He has 30 doubles this season. He’s on pace for 32 homers and 101 RBIs. Riley could become the third third baseman in franchise history to post 30 doubles, 30 homers and 100 RBIs. Chipper Jones did so three times (1999, 2000, 2001) and Eddie Mathews achieved the total in 1953.
