Alabama has a 17-7 lead over Washington at halftime of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl at the Georgia Dome on Saturday.
The top-seeded Crimson Tide’s final score in the half of the College Football Playoff came on a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown by strongside linebacker Ryan Anderson with 1:13 left. Under pressure, Jake Browning tossed a lazy screen pass to the sideline, right to Anderson, who had no one between him and the end zone.
Browning was almost intercepted on the previous play when he threw a pass right to an Alabama defender who dropped it.
It was Alabama’s 15th non-offensive touchdown this season, tops in FBS. It was the first defensive score for Anderson this season.
Washington opened the scoring on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Browning to Dante Pettis at 8:01 left in the first quarter.
Alabama answered with a 18-yard touchdown run by Bo Scarbrough with 5:01 left in the quarter.
The Crimson Tide increased its lead to 10-7 on a 41-yard field goal following a Washington turnover, the game’s first.
Alabama rushed for 106 yards on 25 carries in the half. Washington had 62 yards on 16 carries.
Alabama passed for 32 yards; Washington for 83.
