ACC recruiting roundup
Boston College (16): This small class features three offensive linemen — Boston College's specialty — and two tight ends, as coach Frank Spaziani filled needs. Jim Cashman (6-7, 275), Win Homer and Frank Taylor will join two tight ends out of New Jersey — Dan Crimmins and Mike Giacone — on the line. Steven Daniels, a linebacker from Cincinnati, will get a shot to replace All-America Luke Kuechly, who left for the NFL after his junior season.
Clemson (20): Size ruled the day for coach Dabo Swinney, who signed 10 linemen, including OL Oliver Jones (6-6, 320) and DT Carlos Watkins (6-4, 275). The Tigers also signed quarterback Chad Kelly, the nephew of former Buffalo Bills QB Jim Kelly, out of Buffalo, N.Y., but were shut out of Georgia. Clemson's class is ranked No. 7 by ESPN, No. 9 by Rivals.com and No. 10 by CBSSports.com. Swinney said 6-3, 306-pound guard D.J. Reader might also play pitch for Clemson's baseball team.
Duke (20): Running backs Shaquille Powell of Las Vegas and Jela Duncan of Charlotte highlight a class heavy on speed. Powell was one of seven running backs on Parade's 53-member team after rushing for 2,458 yards and 44 touchdowns as a senior. Duncan had 2,307 yards and 30 touchdowns. Both are 5-10 and 200 pounds. Defensive back DeVon Edwards (Alcovy High), was the lone Georgian to sign with Duke.
Florida State (18): Jimbo Fisher put together one of the top classes in the country for the second consecutive year. He signed Eddie Goldman (6-4, 310), the No. 1 defensive tackle (according to ESPN) and Mario Edwards (6-4, 290), the No. 1 defensive end. Linebacker Reggie Northrup (6-2, 218) changed his mind from Miami and signed with the Seminoles, to go along with top 10 defensive end Chris Casher (6-4, 240) and tackle Justin Shanks (6-3, 310). Stone Mountain linebacker Markuss Eligwe (6-3, 225) adds to this impressive class that includes five-star cornerback Ronald Darby.
Maryland (24): After going 2-10 and finishing his first year on an eight-game losing streak, coach Randy Edsall has found two players he can build around. Offensive lineman Mike Madaras (6-5, 293) and running back Wes Brown (6-1, 210) are both out of Good Counsel (Md.) High. Brown, who is a four-star back who played in the Under Armour All-America Game, joins Albert Reid, Kenneth Goins and Joe Riddle in the backfield. Georgians include offensive lineman Nick Brigham (Marist), receiver Amba Etta-Tawo (McEachern) and defensive back Alvin Hill (Luella).
Miami (24): Tracy Howard, the nation's top cornerback prospect, is one of the keys to Al Golden's class. Defensive end Tyriq McCord (6-3, 215) out of Tampa, receiver Angelo Jean-Louis (6-0, 182), out of Palm Beach Central and linebacker Raphael Kirby (Stephenson), who enrolled early, contribute to a class that is ranked No. 7 by Scout. Linebacker JaWand Blue backed out of a commitment to Virginia Tech at the last minute to sign with Miami.
North Carolina (23): New coach Larry Fedora worked to close the deal with several players after taking over in December. Quarterback James Summers, who committed to N.C. State, but switched because of Fedora's spread offense, and guard J.J. Patterson (6-4, 330), form the core of this class. Both are four-star prospects (Rivals.com). UNC signed four Georgians — quarterback Kanler Coker (Flowery Branch), defensive ends Justin Thomason (Eagle's Landing Christian) and Junior Gnonkonde (Lanier County), and linebacker Nathan Staub (Buford).
N.C. State (23): Coach Tom O'Brien grabbed six players from Georgia, including defensive end Kenderius Whitehead (M.L. King), who also had offers from Clemson and Georgia. Lassiter defensive back Niles Clark and receiver Charlie Hegedus join junior college defensive tackle Deylan Buntyn (6-4, 330), who should provide immediate help on a defensive line plagued with injuries. Just in case, N.C. State also signed defensive tackle K'Hadree Hooker (6-2, 285). Quarterback Pete Thomas transferred from Colorado State.
Virginia (26): Coach Mike London is doing something right in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. He signed 10 players from there Wednesday, giving him 19 in two seasons, according to the Newport News (Va.) Daily Press. This year's group includes defensive end Eli Harold (6-4, 215). Quarterback Greyson Lambert (Wayne County) already is enrolled and cornerback C.J. Moore (Buford) also signed.
Virginia Tech (28): The Hokies lost out on Korren Kirven, a defensive tackle from Lynchburg, Va., who signed with Alabama, but they appear poised to keep their running back tradition strong by signing four, including Drew Harris (6-1, 220), ranked as high as the No. 9 back in the nation. Defensive end Ken Ekanem (6-3, 240) and receiver Joel Caleb (6-3, 205) are two of the top players in Virginia. Georgia players include receiver Joshua Stanford (M.L. King), defensive end Jarontay Jones (Stephenson) and defensive back Davion Tookes (Creekside).
Wake Forest (19): Quarterback Tyler Cameron, who originally committed to Central Florida before switching to Wake Forest in December and then enrolling early, threw for 1,453 yards and rushed for 379 at Jupiter (Fla.) High last fall. Future targets will include receiver Jonathan Williams (6-4, 170), who caught 56 passes for 783 yards at Mays last season, and Carrollton tight end Zach Gordon, (6-5, 235).
