Georgia has a new No. 1 team in Class AAAAAA football for the third straight week.
North Gwinnett, which has blown out two Top 10 teams in its first two games, takes its turn at the top after previous No. 1 Colquitt County was beaten 24-10 on Friday by Hoover of Alabama.
It’s the second straight week that a No. 1 Georgia team has lost to a nationally ranked out-of-state opponent. Preseason No. 1 Norcross lost to Booker T. Washington of Miami in the first week of the season.
North Gwinnet Is No. 1 for the first time since its 9-0 start to the 2006 season. The Bulldogs have beaten Camden County 34-14 and Grayson 35-0. North Gwinnett, off this week, plays at defending champion Norcross on Sept. 13.
Another No. 1 Georgia team failed to win against an out-of-state opponent last week, but Sandy Creek stayed on top of the AAAA rankings after a 27-27 tie with Plant of Tampa. Plant was ranked No. 3 in Florida’s Class 8A in preseason. The defending AAAA champion, Sandy Creek remains unbeaten in its last 40 regular-season games.
This week’s schedule is headlined by a game between No. 1-ranked teams as Buford (AAA) travels to Gainesville (AAAAAA). Gainesville won 19-15 last season, and both teams went on to win state titles.
Five other games match ranked teams: Lovejoy at Colquitt County, Marist at Thomas County Central, Washington-Wilkes at Lincoln County, Prince Avenue Christian at Savannah Christian and George Walton Academy at Aquinas.
Ten teams entered the rankings this week. They were Peachtree Ridge (AAAAAA), Allatoona, Warner Robins and Bainbridge (AAAAA), Wayne County, Mary Persons and Westside-Macon (AAAA), Jefferson County (AAA), Benedictine (AA) and Seminole County (A).
Moving out were Lassiter (AAAAAA), Ware County, Flowery Branch and East Paulding (AAAA), Cairo, Ridgeland and Monroe (AAAA), Blessed Trinity (AAA), Early County (AA) and Dooly County (A).
