On Monday, Savannah Police charged Kavon Giles, 22, in connection with the July 7 shooting death of Mercedes Contreras. Giles was booked into the Chatham County jail on charges of involuntary manslaughter and pointing a gun at another, according to Savannah Police spokesperson Bianca Johnson.
Around 12:30 a.m. on July 7, Savannah Police officers responded to a shots fired call around the 100 block of Shellbark Way. There, they discovered Contreras, 18, suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. She was transported to Memorial Medical Center for treatment where she later died.
