In Hampton County, South Carolina, about 60 miles from Savannah, a double-homicide involving the prominent Murdaugh family has captured the globe's fascination.

Here on the coast, hurricanes create the most weather angst. But Georgia is also seeing more tornadoes than ever, ranking 16th nationally for the highest increase in frequency since 1980 of the terrifying twisters, according to 20-year annual averages.

The state is receiving $18 million for a new emergency housing voucher program that could be a life-saver for many people. The Housing Authority of Augusta will receive 61, and the Housing Authority of Savannah will receive 53. Most of the vouchers – 798 – will go to Georgia Residential Finance, and 202 will go to the Housing Authority of Atlanta.

The point is, we don't live in a bubble. Life is happening all around us and impacting people in profound ways.

And while our first and greatest mission at the Savannah Morning News is to bring you news about what is happening in our own backyard — from local government, education, growth and development, politics and policing, to sports, healthcare, the environment and entertainment — we also recognize there's a big world out there.

Georgia in particular is seemingly ground zero for an abundance of activity of all kinds. With three daily USA TODAY Network newsrooms, including the Savannah Morning News, Augusta Chronicle and the Athens Banner-Herald, we're able to better inform readers with an array of coverage from different areas of the state. We've recently bolstered that effort with the addition of statewide reporter, Abe Kenmore, who writes about the intersections of public policy, data and communities.

But we aren't stopping there. We've begun a content-sharing partnership with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The AJC is a trusted news organization that aligns with our ideals of informing and empowering readers with real, rigorous, in-depth journalism. Working closely with the American Press Institute, the AJC is embarking on an experiment to identify, nurture and expand a network of news partnerships across metro Atlanta and the state.

Savannah Morning News readers can look for a few AJC stories each week that we select and believe will be of interest to our readers. In addition to those, you'll continue to see occasional stories from others who make available state and regional content, such as Georgia Recorder, Georgia Health News, Georgia Public Broadcasting, Capitol Beat and The Current.

Leaning on the resources of our three USA TODAY Network daily newsrooms in Georgia, along with several other of our weekly newsrooms throughout the region, while also partnering with a news organization in the AJC that shares our commitment to truth and transparency, allows us to connect with you, our audience, on topics that we know matter to you.

Sometimes, that topic can be rather fun, too, like must-visit BBQ spots throughout the state.
