A head-on crash near Lenox Road left one person seriously injured and shut down the northbound lanes of Ga. 400 for several hours Friday morning.

According to police, the wreck happened just before 1:45 a.m. and involved a Jeep SUV and a Honda Civic. The driver of the Honda was rushed to a hospital in serious condition and the driver of the Jeep remained at the scene, Atlanta police spokesman Officer Anthony Grant said.

“Preliminary investigation indicates a male driver operating a gray Jeep Latitude was traveling the wrong way on the expressway when he collided head on into a gray Honda Civic,” he said.

The Jeep’s driver was taken to Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center with injuries that police did not consider life-threatening. It’s unclear what charges he could face.

Police are still working to determine where the driver got onto the highway and how long he had been going in the wrong direction before the crash.

The wreck snarled traffic along the busy Buckhead corridor for more than three hours Friday morning as police investigated. Drivers had to use Piedmont Road and Buford Highway as alternate routes. All lanes reopened about 5:30 a.m.
