Many Americans were hit with multiple inches of snow as the winter storm of 2016 swept across the East Coast in January.

While the severe weather might have posed an annoying inconvenience for some, photos released by NASA and NOAA reveal the beauty of the blizzard.

Prominent pictures of the swirling storm show just how much of the U.S. was affected by the blizzard and allow viewers to see city lights in individual states before they were dimmed by snowfall.

NASA also posted satellite videos and 3D animation of cloud movements in the days after the storm and its effects in the Gulf Coast.
