The personal finance site determined its results by analyzing the 50 states using 13 metrics including most Peace Corps volunteers, most veterans and highest volunteer rate. Those indicators were filtered into two major categories: military and civic engagement.

Georgia was No. 9. Virginia and Alaska took first and second place, respectively.

While the state was No. 40 for civic engagement, its high military engagement ranking at No. 5 helped it crack the top 10 list, overall.

The Peach State also racked up points for its high average number of military enlistees. It was No. 1 in that category.

Georgia wasn’t the only Southern state recognized. South Carolina was No. 4 and North Carolina was No. 10.
