Veterinary charity People's Dispensary for Sick Animals is warning pet owners to stop feeding their pets sugary and fatty foods.
BuzzFeed News reported that 3.3 million dogs, 2 million cats and 168,000 rabbits are given treats every day that lead to overweight pets, based on data from the UK charity.
"As well as being high in calories, food like takeaways, cake, cheese, chips, and crisps are high in fat and sugars which are bad for our pets' waistlines and teeth," a volunteer vet with PDSA, Vicki Larkham-Jones, said in a statement.
Larkham-Jones said that although almost half of pet owners said they believe obesity is the biggest threat to animal welfare, they still feed their own pets poorly.
"Some owners even admitted to giving chocolate and even alcohol, both of which are poisonous to pets and can be fatal," she said.
Larkham-Jones said the right food, diet and exercise can prevent pet obesity and turn things around.
