A woman was struck by two cars and killed Tuesday morning after getting out of an SUV during a fight on the Downtown Connector, Atlanta police said.

Officers responded to the fatal crash in the northbound lanes near Fair Drive shortly before 3 a.m., Atlanta police spokesman Officer Anthony Grant said. According to the preliminary investigation, Sheldon M. Cleveland was riding in the backseat of a Jeep Compass on the interstate when she began arguing with another woman inside.

At some point, the driver of the Jeep, Arrie Lee Jenkins, pulled onto the shoulder of the highway to let Cleveland out, Grant said. She was then hit by two other vehicles, and she died at the scene.

Only the driver of the second vehicle stopped to help, and she was not expected to face any charges after cooperating with investigators. Grant said police are still looking for the first driver who hit Cleveland.

“The only reason the second driver wasn’t charged with vehicular homicide is because the victim was already dead,” he said.

Jenkins was arrested at the scene on charges of DUI and driving with an expired license, according to police. He was taken to the Fulton County Jail and released later Wednesday on a $2,000 bond.

The crash investigation shut down northbound lanes of the connector for several hours overnight as drivers were diverted off the interstate, the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center reported.

All lanes reopened shortly before 6 a.m.
