Metro Atlanta won’t get a break from the heat or humidity Wednesday, but some drier times are in the forecast in the days ahead.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said humidity will start to go down by the second half of the weekend, which will take away the fuel for the daily popup storms and allow temperatures to fall. For Wednesday, afternoon rain is 40% likely and temperatures will reach a high of 87 degrees in Atlanta, according to Channel 2.
“Through the morning hours we will stay mostly cloudy, but by the time we get into the late morning we will already start to see a few isolated showers move in across far northwest Georgia,” Deon said. “That activity will increase as we head into the afternoon hours, especially late in the afternoon into the evening.”
Rain activity will be concentrated along and north of I-20, she said. It could last well into Wednesday evening, with heavy downpours and gusty wind possible with some of the stronger storms.
Some areas of North Georgia could see up to 2 inches of rainfall by Wednesday night, and more rain is coming Thursday, according to Channel 2. Another 40% chance of rain is in the forecast, and Deon said it could be more widespread.
“Some of the southern counties that may miss out on the rain today, there’s a better chance that you are going to see scattered storms develop on Thursday,” she said. “With the rain that we are going to see, we have a lot of moisture in place so we could be dealing with some heavy downpours.”
Deon said all this wet weather could make outdoor activities tricky over the next few days.
“Not to say that any of these days are going to be a washout, they are not,” she said. “But there is going to be that chance for showers and storms, so you want to plan accordingly.”
Drier air will begin moving in by Saturday, and by Sunday rain chances will drop back to 30%, according to the latest forecast. Deon said it should turn drier and sunnier by the start of next week.

It may not yet be raining on metro Atlanta roadways, but there are plenty of delays out of the eastern suburbs Wednesday morning, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
Authorities are slowly reopening lanes on I-20 West after a crash shut down the interstate before Sigman Road. Two lanes are open, but there are “massive delays as you make your way from Conyers,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said.
“Sixty minutes of backup trying to get between Ga. 138 to the crash scene,” he said at 6:30 a.m.
Drivers can take Old Covington Highway or Iris Drive, which is the I-20 access road, to avoid the delays.
