The heat has finally kicked on for metro Atlanta, and it’s only going to get hotter and stickier from here.

Wednesday’s projected high is a balmy 80 degrees, which is still about 2 degrees below average for this time of year. Thursday should reach average heat, but temperatures on Friday and over the weekend should rise well above average as humidity builds, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan.

“We’ve got 90-degree weather just around the corner,” he said.

Monahan said a strong area of high pressure along the East Coast is helping to keep the region dry this week. Another 20% chance of a stray shower is in the forecast Wednesday, but he said most will miss out on rain.

The dial on the heat should really crank up after about 10 a.m. Monahan said air conditioners will be working hard Wednesday all the way through about 5 p.m., when temperatures should begin to fall back to overnight lows in the low 60s.

“That combination of heat and humidity together is really going to make it feel a little sticky,” he said.

It is likely Atlanta will see its first 90-degree day of the year this weekend, according to Channel 2. Sunday’s projected high is 91 degrees, but Monahan said even warmer weather is in the forecast for next week.

There are no major delays on metro Atlanta interstates to begin the Wednesday morning rush, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

Even the Downtown Connector is moving smoothly.

“Wide open spaces is what you are dealing with on I-75/I-85 through Midtown,” the Traffic Center tweeted just before 6 a.m.
