Showers falling south of metro Atlanta on Wednesday morning should not stick around for long, according to Channel 2 Action News.

The rain is expected to come to an end later this morning, and North Georgia will even get a shot at some sunshine. But more rain is in the forecast Thursday, as well as the chance for severe weather, Channel 2 meteorologist Eboni Deon said.

“Today is the day to get those plans in because from here on out, we’re going to see conditions going downhill,” she said.

The threat of severe weather increases in North Georgia beginning Thursday morning. While the risk is lowest for those east of metro Atlanta, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 2 warning for the city and a Level 3 for those in far northwest Georgia.

“That’s where we’re going to see the higher probability of maybe some long-tracked tornadoes, some strong gusty winds upwards of 75 mph, hail, as well as heavy rainfall,” Deon said.

Rain will begin adding up, she said, which could also lead to the possibility of flash flooding. Some areas of North Georgia could end up with 2 to 3 inches of rainfall before the end of the week, according to Channel 2.

“It’s definitely going to be wet the next few days,” Deon said. “Today, not so much. We are expecting to see some sunshine later on today.”

Deon said the clouds leftover from the morning showers will start to break up after lunchtime. Temperatures are headed for a high of 76 degrees Wednesday, she said.

The rain Wednesday morning is far enough south that it is not impacting metro Atlanta traffic, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. However, a crash involving two tractor-trailers has done serious damage to the commute for those north of the city.

All southbound lanes of I-85 are shut down at Maysville Road in Jackson County, the Traffic Center reported. Early morning traffic is already stacking up behind the closure.

“Unfortunately, no good alternates to get around the backups,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said.

In the city, I-85 is flowing smoothly through Midtown at 6 a.m. Conditions are lighter than normal on the Downtown Connector, according to the Traffic Center.
