Clouds will increase across North Georgia on Wednesday, but Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said they will not be rainmakers.
Wednesday will be totally dry, despite the lack of sunshine the second part of the day, Monahan said. Rain should hold off until Thursday afternoon.
“We start out with sun, we’re going to finish with some clouds this afternoon,” he said. “Look for a partly to mostly cloudy sky by 5 p.m.”
Early morning sunshine is welcome Wednesday, as temperatures have fallen into the 30s for most of the region. Atlanta is starting the day at 35 degrees, about 10 degrees lower than on Tuesday.
“We need that sunshine,” Monahan said. “It’s cold out there this morning, as it should be in early January.”
With air that cold, frost is possible. Monahan suggested leaving extra time this morning to warm up the car and scrape off any ice that may have settled on the windshield overnight.
Temperatures will eventually make it up into the mid-50s Wednesday, with a projected high of 54 degrees in Atlanta, according to Channel 2. Monahan said they will drop back into the 30s overnight, but the addition of some clouds will keep most above the freezing point.
“Still no rain yet early tomorrow morning, but the rain chances will build early afternoon, and we’ll see a chilly rain fall across metro Atlanta mid- to late afternoon tomorrow,” he said.
The city is not expected to get out of the 40s Thursday. Friday will still be wet, and it will be even colder with a projected high of 46 degrees, according to the latest forecast.
“That means a chance of some winter mix in parts of North Georgia through Friday,” Monahan said.
The northeast Georgia mountains are the most likely to see any freezing precipitation, he said.

Monahan said the only impact to travel Wednesday will be sunshine delays during the morning drive. Before the sun comes up, there are no early delays on metro Atlanta interstates, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
“Not much going on in the traffic world this morning,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said just after 6 a.m. “That is good news if you are about to leave the house.”
