More clouds in the sky Tuesday could produce pop-up rain showers in the afternoon, according to Channel 2 Action News.

The clouds are also responsible for a milder start Tuesday morning. Temperatures are starting the day in the mid- to upper 60s. By the afternoon, Atlanta should hit a high of 78 degrees as rain chances increase and showers move in from the west, Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

“It should not be a big deal, though, just a little different from what we’ve seen the past couple of days,” he said.

Monahan does not expect the showers will impact much, including the drive home from work and school. The biggest impacts will be humidity and limited sunshine Tuesday, he said.

It may feel like North Georgia is turning up the heat, but even warmer weather is just on the horizon. Temperatures in the 80s this week are “going to be cool compared to what is coming our way,” Monahan said.

“Ninety-degree weather is in the forecast this weekend,” he said. “It’s going to feel like summer.”

The month of May has so far been cooler than average, but above-average temperatures are in the forecast beginning Thursday with highs in the mid-80s. Atlanta could see its first 90-degree day of the year on Sunday.

“Typically, we get our first 90-degree day on June 1,” Monahan said. “We are actually going to be ahead of schedule this year, even with that cool start to the month.”

While there are no showers around Tuesday morning, the commute is slow through the Southside because of a lingering overnight construction project, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

Crews wrapped up work on I-75 North at Mt. Zion Boulevard around 6 a.m., but the damage is done, traffic reporter Mark Arum said.

“It is awful, just awful if you are about the leave the house out of McDonough,” he said.

Delays should improve now that all lanes are open. Until traffic recovers, commuters can take I-675 to avoid the backups.
