North Georgia will get a chance to trade in these muggy, wet conditions for cooler and drier air, and it will make the switch in time for the first day of autumn.

Fall arrives Wednesday afternoon with the autumnal equinox at 3:20 p.m. According to Channel 2 Action News, the changing of the seasons will be nearly perfectly timed with a change in the weather pattern from wet to dry.

“The first several days of fall look great,” Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said. “We need a chance to dry out, and we’ll get that. But today make sure you have the umbrella handy.”

It’s going to be wet for the last full day of summer, he said. Rain is mostly light Tuesday morning, but Monahan expects showers to increase as the day goes on, and even a few thunderstorms could pop up. Rain activity is 60% likely Tuesday, according to Channel 2.

“It’s going to be muggy. It’s going to be wet,” Monahan said. “There’s going to be areas of drizzle around. A little soupy out there with the pattern kind of just stuck in this same weather for us.”

Atlanta has recorded rainfall every day for the past six days, resulting in soggy soil and areas of flooding. Monahan expects to see a few more breaks of sunshine Tuesday afternoon than in recent days, but showers will stick around into the evening hours, he said.

Another 60% chance of rain is in the forecast for Wednesday morning.

“Today is a wet day, tomorrow morning is wet, but the afternoon we start turning that corner to that sunshine that’s going to take us into the end of the week and into the weekend,” Monahan said.

A cold front will usher in that dry, crisp fall air Wednesday afternoon and evening, he said, setting up North Georgia for a dry and sunny Thursday. There is plenty of sunshine in the forecast Thursday, Friday and into the weekend, Monahan said.

Atlanta will even get in on some fall temperatures.

“With a few breaks of sun, we’ll get back to the upper 70s in Atlanta (on Tuesday),” he said. “Right around the corner, some lows could be down in the 40s for a lot of us by Thursday morning.”

There are early delays on the Downtown Connector after multiple crashes Tuesday morning, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

The latest crash had cleared to a right shoulder at Freedom Parkway at 6:30 a.m., but it was still contributing to sluggish traffic in the northbound lanes. The Traffic Center expects more delays Tuesday on wet roads.
