However, there are reports of flooding on some interstates, including I-75 in Cobb County. Southbound travel is at a crawl near Windy Hill Road due to ponding, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
In Winder, there are reports of two vehicles stuck in flood waters, according to Channel 2 Action News. As a result, Center Street has been shut down.
UPDATE [4:15 p.m.]: Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is under a ground stoppage due to heavy storms in the area, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Clayton and Fulton counties are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 5 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
The FAA does not expect to lift the ground stop until 5 p.m.
ORIGINAL STORY: Tuesday will be another hot and muggy day, but pop-up showers in the afternoon could provide some relief.
The day will be a scorcher, with a predicted high of 94 degrees in the forecast, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.
“It took a while to get here, but summertime heat is certainly here,” he said.
Things are starting off dry, with temperatures in the mid- and upper 70s. Temperatures will start marching toward the mid-90s by lunchtime.
“The heat’s not going anywhere,” he said. “Keep fanning yourself. Keep yourself nice and cool because it’s going to stay this way today and tomorrow.”
Other parts of Georgia will be even hotter, with highs of 97 degrees in Eatonton and 95 degrees in Athens in the forecast. When you factor in the 93% humidity, it will feel more like 100 degrees.
“It is going to be close to dangerous heat this afternoon if you spend too much time outside,” Monahan said.
Summertime showers and storms will help bring the temperatures down later in the day, according to Channel 2.
The rain will start falling on the Southside and will work its way up toward the North Georgia mountains, Monahan said.
Drivers in Clayton County will want to avoid I-75 between I-285 and Forest Parkway, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
Only one southbound lane is open after a tractor-trailer crashed and turned on its side, the Traffic Center reported. Drivers should use Tara Boulevard or I-675 as alternate routes.
