Officers were called to a wreck on I-285 East just before the I-85 interchange around 6:45 a.m. Tuesday after a dump truck hit another commercial truck.

A man lost his leg in a crash involving two large trucks near Spaghetti Junction that created hours of traffic delays Tuesday morning.

Officers were called to the scene at I-285 East just before the I-85 interchange around 6:45 a.m., DeKalb County police said. A dump truck driver suffered life-threatening injuries after hitting another commercial truck, and emergency medical personnel amputated his leg at the scene, DeKalb fire officials confirmed Wednesday. The injured driver’s identity has not been released.

Photos from the scene showed the dump truck with its entire front end destroyed, its cab tilting toward the driver’s side.

On Wednesday, a police spokesperson said the man was no longer in critical condition, but added that he is likely to face citations related to the crash.

Traffic on I-285 was backed up for hours as crash investigators closed all but one lane of the interstate. All lanes were reopened just before 8:30 a.m., but delays lingered through the morning, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
