It’s been two weeks since a 2-year-old was critically injured when a tree limb fell on him outside his Barrow County daycare. And little Tripp Halstead is still fighting.
Despite the progress he's made in his recovery, his parents said Monday the toddler has suffered some setbacks. A collapsed lung forced doctors to re-insert a breathing tube, Bill and Stacy Halstead said on the Facebook page created for Tripp.
Late Monday, Tripp was sedated and calm — a welcome change for parents who have described the “roller coast ride” recovery for more than 65,000 people on Facebook. Both parents say the outpouring of support, including from strangers all over the country, has helped make it easier to cope with the tragedy.
“Thank you again for all of your prayers,” Bill Halstead posted online late Monday. “There have been several times we wanted to fall over but your prayers would not let us.”
Tripp was injured Oct. 29 while on the playground at his Winder daycare center. He was initially taken to a Barrow County hospital before being transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where he underwent emergency brain surgery.
The Halsteads were initially told every hour was critical to Tripp's survival. A week later, doctors told the family they believed the toddler would survive.
Although Tripp’s prognosis isn’t known, the family says it is grateful for support from the community, including several fundraisers held in the boy’s honor.
