Former state representative and current State Transportation Board member Jay Shaw, of Lakeland, passed away Monday of heart problems.

Officials said Shaw, 67, had been awaiting a heart transplant.

Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry sent out the following notice via email on Monday afternoon:

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Board Member Jay Shaw. Mr. Shaw was elected to the Board in 2010 and served as Chairman from 2012 to 2013 and was most recently the Chair of the finance committee. He served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1994 to 2010 and was a staunch supporter of providing much needed funding for improving the transportation system of Georgia. Committed to public service, he also served as Mayor of Lakeland from 1981 to 1990 and as past Presidents of the Lions Club and the Jaycees. Our condolences to his wife Libby, his two children and four grandchildren.

Funeral and viewing arrangements were not yet available.
