Traffic signals in Cobb County were working properly again Friday afternoon, officials said. But the second such disruption since April has leaders concerned.

About 50 signals went into flash mode after a contractor improperly cut into cable, Cobb Transportation Director Jim Wilgus said early Friday afternoon. The accident happened in the Cumberland Mall area.

“It set off a data storm,” Wilgus said. Crews were dispatched to manually reset the lights, and the countywide situation was resolved about 1 p.m.

Wilgus said he will meet with his operations people to “try to figure out what we can do” to prevent another traffic-light disruption.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
