Westbound traffic began flowing again just before 7 a.m., more than four hours after the crash shut down I-20 at Thornton Road, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

A driver who rear-ended a tractor-trailer was trying to cross I-20 when he was hit by a passing car and killed Monday morning, Cobb County police said.

The accident shut down the westbound lanes past Factory Shoals Road for more than four hours while authorities investigated, forcing commuters off the interstate at Riverside Parkway.

According to police, the victim’s Land Rover hit the tractor-trailer around 2:30 a.m. The big rig continued west and exited onto Thornton Road to turn around and return to the scene of the accident.

“The driver of the Land Rover exited the vehicle and attempted to cross I-20,” Cobb police spokeswoman Officer Sydney Melton said. “He was struck by an unknown vehicle and then several additional vehicles.”

The Land Rover’s driver was dead at the scene. He was identified Tuesday as 29-year-old Edward M. Fowler of Douglasville.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, identified as 38-year-old David Jaworksi Wilson of Montgomery, Ala., was not injured.

Traffic began flowing again just before 7 a.m., but tough delays remained in both directions at the Douglas-Cobb county line for much of the Monday morning drive, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
