1 killed in crash on key Georgia highway

A fatal accident early Thursday involving two trucks closed Highway 441 near Athens for several hours, according to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash was near Tappan Spur Road, the sheriff’s office said. At one point, logs were strewn over the road.

The victim was Gerald Harris, 40, of Bishop, Oconee Coroner Ed Carson told the Athens Banner-Herald. The other driver has not been identified.

The highway has reopened, the sheriff’s office said about 2:30 p.m.
