A Smyrna police officer had to be rescued from his patrol car Thursday morning after a wreck involving an overturned semitruck trapped him inside, officials said.

The crash occurred about 10 a.m. at the intersection of Atlanta and Windy Hill roads, Smyrna police spokesman Sgt. Louis Defense said in a news release. It is not clear what caused the semitruck to overturn and land on top of the patrol car.

Smyrna police Officer P. Colburn was freed from his patrol car and taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Defense said. Details about the truck driver were not released.

The area around Atlanta and Windy Hill roads was shut down while authorities responded to the wreck. The intersection reopened shortly before 2 p.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
