When a juvenile in a stolen vehicle crashed on I-20 West in Conyers early Wednesday, police said he ran toward the very place he was trying to avoid.

“The suspect ... fled ... in the direction of the police department,” Conyers police spokeswoman Kim Lucas said in a statement. “During a shift change.”

Conyers police officers helped the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office capture the juvenile on unspecified charges.

Rockdale sheriff's spokesman Michael Meyers said Thursday he could not release any additional information because the suspect is a juvenile.

“It’s under investigation,” he said.

The chase and the crash shut down all but one lane of I-20 West past Ga. 138 until 7:19 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
