A Gwinnett County road that was shut down for nearly three hours Tuesday due to a gas leak has reopened, according to authorities.

Rockbridge Road was closed between Pirkle Road and Sherwood Drive after a crew digging underground cut a three-inch line just after 10 a.m., according to Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services.

A hazardous materials team responded to the scene and residents in two homes were ordered to shelter in place. An emergency crew from Atlanta Gas Light Co. was able to stop the escaping gas vapors by capping the ruptured line just before 12:45 p.m., according to Gwinnett fire.

“There were no evacuations and no injuries reported," the department said.

The roadway reopened just after 12:50 p.m.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
