More sunshine in the forecast Thursday will allow temperatures to rise, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Atlanta’s projected high is 89 degrees, making Thursday the warmest day so far this week. Temperatures are still slightly below average for this time of year, but Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said lots of tropical moisture in the air will make it feel even hotter outside — and “pretty steamy” too.

North Georgia will still see “a few downpours here and there,” Monahan said. “But a lot of sunshine mixed in between these downpours, and that’s why temperatures get close to 90 for a high later on today.”

The rain chance is low Thursday at 40%. Monahan said most of the region will stay dry through the morning hours, resulting in ideal conditions on the roads for the Thursday morning commute. Showers and storms should begin popping up after about 1 p.m., he said.

“Not everybody is going to see it,” he said. “There will be some storms around, but not an all-day rain for anyone.”

With all the humidity, Monahan said any rain that develops could be heavy but quick. He expects tropical downpours will fire up and fizzle out quickly, similar to Wednesday’s rain.

All this rain is contributing to high levels of mold.

Friday should see more of the same, Monahan said. A 40% chance of rain is in the forecast through Saturday, and Sunday’s rain chances increase to 60%.

“We’ll be right around 90 for a high Friday and Saturday as well,” Monahan said. “Still a little bit below average. We should be right at 90; we stay in the upper 80s for highs.”

Beyond Sunday, Monahan said “next week is looking kind of wet.”

The Thursday morning commute is off to a smooth start with the exception of I-20 in DeKalb County. A crash with debris is blocking multiple eastbound lanes at Evans Mill Road at 6:30 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

Roadwork is also causing some delays on I-75 South past Ga. 138 in Stockbridge, the Traffic Center reported.
