If you are looking for the sun Thursday, you won’t find it.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said there will be very few breaks of sunshine as clouds fill in and rain chances increase Thursday afternoon. Showers should remain light and scattered during the morning hours, he said, but there is a chance for severe weather later this evening.

“Our risks for showers and thunderstorms is going to be going up across the metro area, especially later today,” Nitz said.

According to Channel 2, rain should not be an issue for the morning commute, but the evening commute could be impacted by scattered thunderstorms. Nitz expects showers to pick up in metro Atlanta at midday, followed by another round of heavier rain between noon and 4 p.m.

After sunset, he said severe weather is possible with the third wave of scattered showers and thunderstorms. The severe threat is considered low for North Georgia, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.

“These storms will bring gusty winds and an isolated strong to severe storm is possible,” he said. “The lightning, the heavy rain, and then even some hail is a possibility, as well.”

In between the rain showers, Atlanta is expected to reach a high of 84 degrees. Nitz said all of North Georgia will get a chance to dry out overnight before waking up Friday to a mostly dry day with a mix of sun and clouds.

“We’ll put your rain chance at 20% for a stray shower, mainly in the morning hours,” he said.

The hit-or-miss showers and storms will continue through the weekend before rain chances ramp up early next week, according to Channel 2. Monday could be wet with a 60% chance of thunderstorms in the forecast.

While pavement is dry across most of metro Atlanta on Thursday morning, commuters are running into a familiar slow zone on the Southside, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

“It is more than slow, it is jammed right now trying to get between Morrow and Stockbridge,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said.

There are 16 minutes of extra delays on I-75 South at 6:30 a.m. because of a construction project at Ga. 54. Now that the roadwork has cleared, Arum expects delays will improve.
