There is just no way around it: Thursday will be a cold day in North Georgia.
Temperatures are in the 30s in metro Atlanta to begin the day and will only rise to a high of about 43 degrees, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon. The northeast Georgia mountains will struggle to make it out of the 30s, she said.
Despite the chill, Deon said Thursday should be a nice day with sunshine and dry conditions.
“The cloud cover that we have around early this morning will give way to some sunshine as they finally start to break up later this afternoon,” she said. “But, boy, we are certainly going to see the cool, and even much cooler than normal for this time of year.”
Atlanta typically sees mid-50s for highs in the middle of December. Overnight, Deon said temperatures will plunge further into the 20s all across the region. The city is expected to bottom out at a freezing 29 degrees.
North Georgia will stay below average for a few more days before temperatures start to moderate, she said. Friday’s projected high is 51 degrees, and Saturday should be slightly warmer at 52 degrees, according to Channel 2.
“Our temperatures are gradually getting back on track, getting more to seasonal levels,” Deon said. “Especially toward the weekend and early next week, that’s when temperatures will finally make it back into the mid-50s.”
The weekend also looks like rain. Deon said a 20% chance of showers Saturday increases to 30% Sunday.
“It’s going to be one of those weekends where we’re mainly going to be dry for the start, and then we’ll have some rain to finish out,” she said. “It doesn’t look like a washout at all, but we are certainly going to be dealing with some wetter conditions on Sunday with a few showers rolling in.”

There are no major delays on metro Atlanta interstates to start the Thursday morning drive, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
“We don’t have a lot of volume,” traffic reporter Ashley Frasca said just before 6 a.m. “We don’t have wet pavement, so that is good news.”
Things are expected to pick up, however. Frasca said both the morning and afternoon drives are likely to be a little sluggish on the Downtown Connector. Traffic on the interstate should slow to about 35 mph around 5 p.m. with holiday travelers mixing in with commuters, she said.
