North Georgia should turn dry and sunny later Thursday as Tropical Storm Eta passes by well to the south, according to Channel 2 Action News.

A cold front moving through the region triggered some overnight storms, but it will help to block Eta from causing any problems locally, Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said. Once the front passes by, it will sweep away any remaining rain, he said.

Conditions are already starting to improve in metro Atlanta, while steadier rain remains east of the city in the Athens area. With temperatures in the upper 60s, Monahan said it does not feel like a typical November morning.

“The day starts kind of soggy, but it finishes nice,” he said. “We’ll be in the mid-70s for your Thursday afternoon.”

Monahan said the rain will stop in time for dry pavement on the afternoon drive home. And a projected high of 75 degrees is T-shirt and shorts kind of weather, he said.

Much more sunshine is in the forecast Thursday than the day before, which saw only about an hour of filtered sunlight. Monahan predicts Atlanta will get about six hours of sunshine Thursday, and it only gets brighter toward the weekend.

“Friday and Saturday are looking great,” he said. “A little bit cooler. We’re going to have plenty of sunshine.”

With clear conditions overnight, Friday morning will feel more like fall, according to Channel 2. A projected low of 52 degrees is more in line with average morning temperatures, which are typically in the mid-40s this time of year.

The rain may be coming to an end in metro Atlanta, but roads are still wet Thursday morning. And an early rollover crash is causing “massive delays” on I-20, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

The crash was blocking all westbound lanes at Sigman Road.

“Do not get on I-20 out of Newton or Rockdale counties,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said. “It is still a red alert.”

The interstate has been a “gridlock mess” since about 5 a.m., Arum said. Motorists should take Old Covington Highway or Sigman Road as alternates, according to the Traffic Center.
