Showers and storms firing up after lunchtime Thursday could make for a wet evening commute, according to Channel 2 Action News.
Atlanta’s chance of rain is only about 40%, but it will last late into the evening. Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said while he can’t rule out an isolated strong storm, the main impact will be heavy rain.
“There’s no rain out there right now, even though we have some clouds,” Monahan said Thursday morning. “That’s going to change later today, so leave the house with the umbrella handy.”
Thursday is starting out dry with temperatures in the 60s across the city. Rain is expected to pick up as temperatures rise, eventually topping out at an afternoon high of 87 degrees, according to Channel 2.
Monahan expects the storms to become widespread by 5 p.m., just in time for commuters to hit the roads. Scattered downpours should continue until well after dark, he said.
“If you have some late evening plans, be aware there is going to be some rain around,” he said.
A 100% chance of rain is in the forecast Friday. Monahan said a cold front is headed for North Georgia, which will bring heavy rain and storms into metro Atlanta around 9 a.m. It could create slick conditions for the end of the Friday morning commute, he said.
Things should improve after the front passes by Friday night, wiping out the storms and humidity. That is good news for those running the AJC Peachtree Road Race this weekend.

Humidity should be lowest for those with a Saturday morning start time, when Monahan expects a low of about 66 degrees. Those running on Sunday should still enjoy low humidity, and it will be even cooler with a projected low of 62 degrees at 6:30 a.m.
Monahan said it should be great running weather.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve had a Peachtree this comfortable, with sunshine and low humidity,” he said.

It could be the dry weather, or it could be volume thinning ahead of the holiday weekend, but things aren’t looking too bad on metro Atlanta roads Thursday morning. No major crashes or delays have been reported as of 7:30 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
Drivers in Norcross might want to avoid Jimmy Carter Boulevard, however. A crash has lanes blocked at Everest Trail, the Traffic Center reported.
