Q&A on the News
Q: Why isn’t the Georgia Dome implosion being done on Sunday? A weekday event disrupts so much of the area.

A: Today was selected for the implosion because there was an event in the Georgia World Congress Center through Sunday evening, Holly Richmond, director of communications for the Georgia World Congress Center Authority, told Q&A on the News via email.
The authority also took into account that traffic patterns would be lighter due to Thanksgiving week and that Atlanta Public Schools would be on Thanksgiving break.
“After checking with the city and our partners, we identified Monday as the date that worked best,” she wrote.
The Atlanta Falcons played at the Georgia Dome in downtown Atlanta for 25 years before moving into the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium next door this season.
The Falcons’ game this week is tonight at the Seattle Seahawks.
The Georgia Dome had been set for implosion in July. The timetable was pushed back after Mercedes-Benz Stadium experienced construction delays, the AJC previously reported.
