A Texas high school basketball coach is in hot water for repeatedly calling a player “Buckwheat.”
Allen High School coach Clay Jackson has been placed on administrative leave after black parents complained that he used racially insensitive nicknames like “Buckwheat” for his players, according to a report on WFAA-TV in Dallas.
Jackson, who is white, told school officials he didn’t realize the name “Buckwheat” was racially insensitive. Buckwheat is a character from the “Little Rascals” TV series from the 1930s. The character is viewed by some as a racial stereotype demeaning to black people.
Chidi Ogbuta told WFAA that the coach had called her daughter the name several times and even wrote it on the board during practice. She said the coach engaged in “racial bullying” that made her daughter feel bad.
“My daughter doesn’t want to play basketball anymore… a game that she loves,” Ogbuta told WFAA.
