A suspect was killed early Monday in Georgia after reportedly shooting a Tennessee officer during a traffic stop Sunday afternoon in Chattanooga, according to the East Ridge (Tennessee) Police Department’s Facebook page.

The suspect, Christopher J. Kitts, 43, engaged officers in Rossville with gunfire before being fatally shot, the East Ridge Police Department said. Kitts was pronounced dead at the scene, the police department said.

Gunshots were heard early Monday near the Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park in Rossville amid a pursuit, according to reporter Mary Francis Hoots of WRCB.

The Georgia State Patrol found Kitts' car Sunday in Rossville, according to multiple reports.

A helicopter hovered over the Milford Drive area Sunday afternoon in Rossville looking for Kitts, according to Hoots.

Kitts was on the run and reportedly was near the amusement park Sunday afternoon, according to Hoots.

Hoots reported hearing several loud gunshots about 6:20 p.m. Sunday near Lakeview and Page Road.

The East Ridge officer, who was identified as Cpl. Terry Prescott, was shot during a traffic stop about 1:50 p.m. Sunday at Ringgold Road and John Ross Road in Tennessee, Police Chief Stan Allen told reporter Rosana Hughes.

The officer reportedly was in stable condition Sunday, according to Hoots.
