Teen charged after Macon high school student shot to death

A 17-year-old Macon high school student died Thursday night after being shot multiple times, and another teenage boy has been charged in his killing, according to news reports citing the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.

Joe Lewis Woolfolk III was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds, Coroner Leon Jones said, according to 13WMAZ in Macon.

Woolfolk was once a student at Windsor Academy, where he played football and basketball, said assistant football coach George Birch, 13WMAZ reported.

The shooting happened Thursday night about 10:30 when deputies were called to a home in the 1600 block of Winston Drive, where they found both teens down.

The surviving 16-year-old, who has not been identified, was briefly hospitalized with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg. By Friday morning, investigators considered him a suspect, 13WMAZ reported.

“After further investigation, it was discovered that the 16-year-old victim in this incident was also involved in the death of 17-year-old Joseph Woolfolk,” a Bibb County Sheriff’s Office news release said Friday morning.

The accused is being held at the Macon Regional Youth Detention Center.

Police have not revealed the circumstances that led to the incident, nor whether both teens shot each other.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate.
