Starting Sunday, whether or not they’re ready for oppressive summer heat, Alantans will be forced to acclimate to temperatures regularly reaching into the 90s.

Sunday’s high of 90 degrees will become the new normal, with a high-pressure system stuck over Georgia for at least a week keeping rain away and allowing heat to build, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said.

“On Sunday we’re expecting to see a few more areas hitting the 90-degree marker,” Deon said. “Turning even hotter as we get into the next few days, looks like we are going to keep it dry.”

With such hot, dry weather in the forecast, experts recommend taking some extra precautions and pursuing leisure activities that will help you stay cool.

“Those outdoor activities you have planned are a go,” Deon said. “It’s going to be fantastic to getting some pool time or some kind of water activities to keep cool and beat the heat. Make sure you’re staying hydrated as well.”

“Now, that big dome of high pressure that’s keeping us rain-free is going to hang on through next week,” Deon said. The forecast is consistent all week, with no chance of rain and near-record high temperatures in the mid-90s expected each day.

Get used to scorching temperatures because they'll be here all week.

The Atlanta Braves will enjoy a bluebird day for their Sunday afternoon game at 1:20 p.m., so expect traffic around the intersection of I-75 and I-285 as fans flock to Truist Park. The only thing hotter than this week’s forecast might be the Braves’ bats following a record-breaking 20-1 win Friday night.

Georgia Department of Transportation crews will take advantage of the weather as well. Watch out of lane closures on Ga. 400 North Sunday night as work crews continue a resurfacing project. In Coweta County, there will be lane closures on Ga. 14 from the county line to Ga. 92.

As usual, there will be lane closures and traffic modifications around the junction of Ga. 400 and I-285 as the Transform 285/400 project continues.
