"He was surrounded by family, friends, classmates, and teachers -- literally a community of love,” Swan wrote Monday evening.

Last month, Swan committed to Rhodes College in Memphis to run track, the Athens Banner-Herald reported. He placed second in the 800-meter Class A private school state track meet.

“The coach called me to see if I was interested in a visit. I said yes,” Swan told the newspaper. “I went down for an overnight and had a lot of fun. A couple of months later I went again. I realized I really loved the school and really liked the program. I decided it was a good fit for me.”

Funeral arrangements were pending. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that donations be made to Athens Academy in Swan’s honor.
