State agencies spending more federal dollars

Federal spending by state agencies has increased since the start of the Great Recession. Below are some of the agencies that receive federal funding:

Department of Community Health (Medicaid)

Fiscal 2008: $5.04 billion

Fiscal 2012: $6.13 billion

Department of Education:

Fiscal 2008: $1.55 billion

Fiscal 2012: $2.09 billion

Department of Transportation:

Fiscal 2008: $975 million

Fiscal 2012: $1.29 billion

Department of Community Affairs

Fiscal 2008: $167 million

Fiscal 2012: $195 million

Department of Public Safety

Fiscal 2008: $26.8 million

Fiscal 2012: $33.2 million

Total state spending (state, federal and other sources):

Fiscal 2008: $38.5 billion

Fiscal 2012: $40.5 billion
