A group of Georgia gun owners called on lawmakers Wednesday to pursue changes to the state’s weapons laws, urging the House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee chairman to consider proposed legislation.

House Bill 10, sponsored by state Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver, D-Decatur, would ban assault weapons, high-capacity magazines and certain ammunition.

Stop School Shootings Now found Clare Schexnyder, whose group is comprised of gun owners calling for changes to the state’s weapons laws, said something needs to be done to deter tragedies such as last month’s shooting at a south Florida high school Feb. 14 that left 17 people dead.

“They’re reasonable people who own guns, but they think that there should be some limits based on what’s happening in our country today,” she said. “It’s clear, when you bury the bill, you will bury more children.”

Decatur High School junior Chloe Guzman said she and her peers are very concerned about gun safety, working to organize a local “March for our Lives” event. March for our Lives is a rally being held Saturday in Washington, D.C., that was organized by survivors of the Valentine’s Day high school shooting.

“I don’t think (lawmakers) realize how much support this issue has,” she said. “I hope that our state legislators and federal legislators will listen to us.”
