The foundation for the University System of Georgia will donate $50,000 to the state's new needs-based scholarship.

Foundation Chairman Ken Bernard, who serves on the State Board of Regents, will present the donation Saturday.

REACH is a privately funded scholarship targeting students from low-income homes. Middle school students will work with mentors and receive other support to help them graduate from high school. They will receive the scholarship if they maintain good grades and stay out of trouble.

The first scholarships will be awarded in fall 2017.
