A 19-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection to the killing of a Valdosta man last week, police say.

The Valdosta Police Department arrested Shamar Dequan Wilson, 19, on Monday on charges of felony murder, armed robbery, two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, police officials told the Valdosta Times. He is accused of killing 30-year-old Rashawn Mays.

On Jan. 22, the VPD was called about 7:47 p.m. to the 700 block of South Oak Street, where they found the victim dead. Police believe Mays was involved in a dispute with someone he knew when a gun was drawn and he was shot.

“Our detectives and crime scene personnel have been working nonstop conducting this investigation and processing evidence,” VPD Chief Leslie Manahan told the Times. “I am extremely proud of the work that our department has done and is continuing to do in this case.”

The investigation is ongoing and potentially more charges are to come, authorities said. Wilson remains in the Lowndes County Jail without bond.
