Gwinnett County will probably not have external cameras on any of its school buses in time for the start of the 2014-15 school year, officials said Monday.
District officials want to put the cameras on the buses to catch motorists who drive past buses that have stopped to pick up or drop off students. Gwinnett had hoped to finalize the contract in June, but officials said they needed to work out an agreement with the county government.
Gwinnett Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks warned last month that if a contract was not ready by July, the district may not be able to put any cameras on the buses by the first day of school, Aug. 5. The contract is not on Thursday’s school board agenda.
District spokeswoman Sloan Roach said Gwinnett is still working on the agreement and hopes to have cameras on some buses sometime during the fall semester. “That’s our goal,” she said Monday.
The board meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Thursday at district headquarters, 437 Old Peachtree Road N.W. in Suwanee. The board has scheduled a tour at 2 p.m. Thursday of a new school, Northbrook Middle School, that is scheduled to open in August.
