After getting a month’s worth of rain during the workweek, sunny weather has returned to Atlanta and plans to stay for the weekend.

According to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Jennifer Lopez, Atlanta’s average rainfall in the month of October is 3.28 inches. During the past five days, the city received 2.99 inches of rain, saturating the ground and putting many metro areas on watch for flash floods.

The rain clouds have finally moved over the horizon and the weekend is expected to be gorgeous, Lopez said.

“Saturday morning, we see quiet weather,” Lopez said. “We’ve got some nice sunshine to deal with all day Saturday and into Sunday.”

Saturday started off in the low-60s and should warm under partly cloudy skies to a high in the low-80s by mid-afternoon. There is no chance of rain, but plenty of moisture in the air means it will feel muggy, Lopez said.

The dry weather trend will continue into next week, with several days in a row expected to hit high temperatures in the low-80s and no rain.

As for traffic this weekend, sports are not likely to be a factor, with all of Atlanta’s major sports teams playing away games. There are still plenty of roadwork projects planned, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

In DeKalb County, overnight lane closures will be installed on I-85 from Clairmont Road down to Midtown to replace pavement markings. There will also be overnight lane closures on Buford Highway for resurfacing.

In Cobb County, daytime lane closures will be installed for the ongoing widening project along Powder Springs Road. Lanes will be closed overnight on both Marietta Parkway and Veterans Memorial Highway for resurfacing. There will also be overnight lane closures for a restriping project on I-20 that passes through South Cobb as it moves from Fulton to Douglas counties.

Work continues in Clayton County Saturday night with lane closures for the new collector-distributor lanes being constructed at the junction of I-75 and I-285.

On the northern side of the metro area, contractors will install daytime lane closures on Cumming Highway and South Main Street in Alpharetta for a widening and reconstruction project. Moving south in Fulton, there will be overnight lane closures on I-75 at Northside Drive and Moores Mill Road for bridge rehabilitation projects. Finally, lanes will be closed overnight on Campbellton-Fairburn Road for nearly 9 miles for resurfacing.
