A rainy weekend is in store with cooler temperatures on its heels.

Saturday is the third straight day in a row with a predicted high temperature in the 90s, but persistent rain on the horizon will wash away the heat.

A trough of low pressure and a cold front in the midwest are both headed towards Georgia, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Jennifer Lopez. Those weather systems are bringing rain and cooler temperatures steadily towards the Atlanta area.

“Both of these are going to sink southward and kind of sit over our area for the weekend,” Lopez said. “We do expect some rain.”

The high temperature is expected to hit 91 on Saturday with a 40% chance of rain. On Sunday, the high drops to 86, then 83 on Monday, with an 80% chance of rain on both days.

In the beginning of the workweek, the metro Atlanta area is expected to start seeing the effects of Fred, the tropical depression that has the potential to develop into a tropical storm.

While there are no major sporting events Saturday to affect traffic, there are plenty of roadwork projects scheduled - weather permitting.

In Cobb County, keep an eye out for daytime lane closures on Powder Springs Road for an ongoing widening project. Lane closures and traffic pattern changes will be installed all weekend on Roswell Road at its junctions with Robinson Road and Indian Hills Parkway for intersection reconstruction projects. Elsewhere in Cobb, lane closures will be installed on Veterans Memorial Parkway to continue a resurfacing project.

Clayton County will install lane closures on multiple interstates Saturday. Watch out for work crews on I-675 where it joins I-285 as they replace overhead highway signs. Many lanes around the I-75 junction with I-285 will be closed all weekend for the construction of additional traffic lanes at the busy interchange.

In DeKalb County, lanes will be closed on I-85 as crews work on bridge rehabilitation projects and Clairmont and Shallowford roads. Stretching from DeKalb into Fulton County, lanes will be closed further south on I-85 for restriping and safety improvements.

Elsewhere in Fulton, ramps will be closed on I-75 at Jonesboro Road for the installation of wrong-way driving deterrents. Near the border with Cherokee County, lane closures will be installed on Birmingham Highway for resurfacing work. More resurfacing and lane closures will take place on Ga. 400 between its interchange with I-85 and Johnson Ferry Road.

As usual, expect to see lane closures and changing traffic patterns around the junction of Ga. 400 and I-285 for the ongoing Transform 285/400 project.
