Intense heat will stick around through the weekend before a cold front brings relief at the beginning of the workweek.

A heat advisory will go into effect Saturday from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m., according to Channel 2 Action News Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns. With a high temperature of 94, the heat index is expected to reach 110 degrees, leading experts to warn Atlanta residents that heat stress is likely if spending a prolonged time outdoors.

“There’s a cold front sitting up here in Tennessee,” Burns said. “That’s going to cruise down to North Georgia over the weekend and stall out, and that’ll be the focusing mechanism for showers and storms.”

With Saturday’s heat, pop-up showers and isolated storms are expected around the metro area in the afternoon, with a 30% chance of rain on the day. The weather is expected to remain much the same Sunday, with a high in the mid-90s and plenty of humidity before rain lowers the temperature on Monday.

Early in the workweek, scattered storms will lower the high temperatures by about 10 degrees. After a 60% chance of rain Monday, the chance drops to 30% on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Traffic should be reasonable Saturday, with some lane closures for roadwork and just one major sporting event. The Atlanta Braves host the Milwaukee Brewers at Truist Park at 7:20 p.m., so be aware of traffic Saturday evening near the junction of I-75 and I-285.

In Cobb County, lane closures will be installed along Veterans Memorial Highway from Douglas to Fulton counties for resurfacing work all weekend. In Clayton County, expect lane closure on I-675 North as work crews replace overhead highway signs.

Further north on I-675 in DeKalb County, there will be overnight lane closures on I-285 for bridge repair work where I-675 joins the Perimeter. There will also be lane closures and traffic pattern changes around the junction of Ga. 400 and I-285 for the Transform 285/400 project.
